I cannot stop coding on my bot. I guess this is a good thing, though, as I hit a point in my coding a few weeks ago where I totally lost my inertia. I guess this makes up for never being able to find people to play corewars with, back in the day. Plus, it's helping me dust the rust off of my nearly nonexistent python skills. :D Hopefully after the contest ends on the 22nd I can keep up the inertia and carry on where I left off with my other projects again.

Come play with me! You can code the bot in any language of your choice, then upload them to the server for fighting against any of the other bots in a randomly generated solar system.

Gärtners kritisches Sonntagsfrühstück: Zu Tal

Nun war es fast passiert: daß schlicht nichts los war. Ein neuer Ausfall des mächtigsten und evendöll lustigsten Mannes der Welt („Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?”

ramil: you seem to be the only one in the world who heard McCartney say this. Are you sure he really did? Or or you just passing on a rumor?

I've started something of a campaign for truth in attribution here on D*. I'm trying to get people to check the truth of their attributions before they post. I know that posters on the internet rarely worry about whether or not their posts are true, but that can change here on D*. This is not Twitter, and we are not Donald Trump.

Have you read actual Buddhist Sut[tr]ras? Lots of good stuff, especially when you have some grounding like you (sound like) you do.

Once you get used to the archaic style, of course. ;)

archaic Buddhist sutras, archaic styles, grounded people....Anybody seen "Way of the White Clouds?"

Peter Kroptkin, the free books at http://freedomainradio.com

I'm pretty familiar with Kropotkin don't know how similar he is to Alan Watts though. Perhaps the systems that Kropotkin describe are a logical conclusion of mass acceptance of what Watts is talking about but outside of that....

Osho and Jiddu Krishnamurti come to mind immediately. I'd also recommend Terence McKenna. To a lesser degree, perhaps, and on a more psychological note, try this .

That's a great question Zulu, and I don't think there's a clear answer, or at least not an exact one.

A genre is a category in a very broad sense. The term 'genre' is used most typically in the sense of a 'kind' of artistic or creative work. These works all share a particular 'trait' that marks participation in the genre. Genres are sometimes presumed to be stable and fixed, unchanging over time. One way of thinking of this is that a genre is trans-historical, in that the trait that marks participation in the genre persists over time (it is outside of historical contingency, eg a landscape painting by me and a landscape painting by Holbein (or some old dead artist) is the same genre. This persistent stability is the idea that genre has a stable identity. The other idea is that genre is based on the specific historical contingencies of the time. That is, post-internet, landscape paintings in 2015 are completely different from the landscapes of Caspar David Friedrich and JMW Turner, for example. This idea of genre is focuses on the differences. So these two correspond to the ide... ver más

Oh, I thought I should note the recursive nature of this position, especially when you asked what is genre 'exactly'. The question, what is genre, can assumed genre to be trans-historically stable, or it could be assumed to be historically contingent. So it's actually hard to find out what a genre is. (Sorry I think I am slipping into the jargon of my thesis :/ )

I'm missing comments.

Hi Zulu.

My thesis isn't online, as far as I know :) I could put the abstract here, but it is probably not appropriate: I study art history/theory, and the stuff we have been discussing is important, but it mostly about one third of the thesis. Anyway here it is:
"Why would conceptual artists turn to landscape painting? This thesis explores the landscape works of Art & Language (A&L) and Ian Burn through the frame of Jacques Derrida’s understanding of genre. In The Law of Genre (1980) Derrida observes that genre has been interpreted as either based on a categorical purity that persists over time, or on the social or historical contingencies out of which the work emerges. For Derrida, these genre positions are not opposites, rather each includes the other as an element that both enables and contaminates. Derrida states that through this relationship, these two models of genre are both asserted at the same time. This reciprocal relationship between genre positions forms an interpretive framework for A&L’s Hostages series (1989–90), an

Neat thesis and even neater questions! The curve would be more a string of instances that you can then group any which way as needed, if needed (we already do this in a bell curve with standard deviations). What I'm thinking of though is more of thinking in terms of that curve rather than honing in on its often arbitrary categories. This gets interesting when you throw in multiple parameters.

That quote says so much to me; it's difficult to unpack it all at once. It boils down to contrast: in identity terms, I can't imagine have a thing without its respective non-thing also existing (eg: "us" and a "them"). Often identities are defined through that which they're not, even if not explicitly. An athlete is not unskilled in their sport, for example, which is one facet upon which they may hinge their identity, cleaving themselves off from the rest of the population through it.

This goes further. With contrast comes competition which allows for winners and losers... but this is ne... ver más

I love the text field for gender. I hadn't noticed that :) It is a really simple response to what we are discussing, but you can see it's radicality if it were more widespread. How would we categorise the genres of gender if they could be any string?

The if question is really interesting. The apparent need to categorise is especially important when those categorisations suggest a value judgement and hence a kind of reductive violence toward the multiplicity of being. The quote suggests as much to me: The universe is multiple, open and not-distinct, but then we use our language and thought to divide and reconnect. Like Buddhism suggests, with our thoughts we create the world (as was drilled into me from an early age through Monkey Magic :) [this is what I am quoting here]. I think it's important to remember the active role in definition: we define things using oppositional or binary thought. Your choice of word 'Cleave' makes the Derridean in me remember how this word means both to join and to separate (Derrida is always going on about these words, mo... ver más

Hi Zulu,

Thanks for all those links! I have been slowly digesting them over the past few days. I know of another Australian indigenous use of cardinal directions in the Thaayorre also here: 20mins, audio only. The main point is that people usually use spatial terms to describe temporality, and that these are generally left-to-right for Europeans, up and down in some Chinese languages, right-to-left in Arabic and Hebrew speakers, etc. The researchers in the links use visual cues such as an uneaten banana, a half eaten, and a completely eaten banana. Participants had to arrange the pictures in time. The Thaayorre arrange the images East to West regardless of which direction they are facing (they also refer to things such as 'your south west leg', but I think you were already talking about this RE the Warlpiri).

That's pretty cool I think. All of these points seem to su... ver más
