“Everyone Made Themselves the Hero.” Remembering Aaron Swartz

On January 18, 2012, the Internet went dark. Hundreds of websites went black in protest of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA). The bills would have created a “blacklist” of censored websites based on accusations of copyright infringement. SOPA was en route to quietly passing. But when millions of Americans complained to their members of Congress, support for the bill quickly vanished. We called it the Internet at its best. As we approach the fifth anniversary of the blackout, we also note a much sadder anniversary.

About the lack of critical mass in the anti-surveillance movement: A comment

Maybe this paragraph from Tor's website [Want Tor to really work?] points out some clue to think:
Tor tries to prevent attackers from learning what destination websites you connect to. However, by default, it does not prevent somebody watching your Internet traffic from learning that you're using Tor. If this matters to you, you can reduce this risk by configuring Tor to use a Tor bridge relay rather than connecting directly to the public Tor network. Ultimately the best protection is a social approach: the more Tor users there are

Critics protest handling of rights to hacktivist Aaron Swartz's writings

Decision to grant a publisher the right to print the writings of Aaron Swartz -- viewed by some as a martyr of the open-access movement -- sets off a debate about copyright.

The Battle to Control the Internet

The Internet is under attack. Free speech, innovation, and democracy are all up for grabs.

Killswitch is about the battle for control over the Internet. Lawrence Lessig, Tim Wu and Peter Ludlow frame the story of two young hactivists, Aaron Swartz & Edward Snowden, who symbolize the disruptive and dynamic nature of the Internet.

Their lives parallel one another as they free information to millions on the Internet, putting them directly in the cross-hairs of the most powerful interests in the world. Will this be a cautionary tale of what happens when you dare to take on elite power structures? Or will it be the spark that ignites a revolution that will redefine democracy in the digital age?

A Digital Crossroads: 'The Internet's Own Boy' Sparks an Important Conversation

http://www.documentary.org/magazine/digital-crossroads-internets-own-boy-sparks-important-conversation

"What kind of Internet do we want? Do we want it to be a tool for government surveillance? Or do we want it to a tool for creativity and expression that lives up to the kind of potential that we all believed it could be? That's the choice we face." ~ Brian Knappenberger
