Stop the Crop

(2013)

The film explores the continuing problems associated with the use of GM in modern day agriculture and highlights the possibility that European Union ministers may soon approve far ranging GM cultivation throughout Europe. As this deadline looms closer, the film tells the story of how communities in Argentina (and across latin America) have been affected by GM crops and the extensive spraying of pesticides; explores how these GM crops are already entering our food chain through animal feed in Europe and shows ever increasing evidence that suggests GM is not the miracle crop it is purported to be.

Hauyat

Traditional knowledge meets Western science on the central coast of British Columbia.

Hauyat is a quiet inlet along the central coast of British Columbia, sheltered from the wild swells of the open Pacific Ocean, about 400 kilometers north of Vancouver. An outsider may see few traces of human habitation on the landscape, but the ancestors of the Heiltsuk Nation lived here for millennia, managing the landscape and cultivating a deep connection between people and place. People stopped living at Hauyat in the 20th century, but many still visit and recall childhoods spent here, in the words of one elder, learning how to be Heiltsuk. Today, many Heiltsuk live nearby in the small village of Bella Bella, which has been in the news more than usual of late. In September, it was the site of a royal visit by Prince William and Duchess Catherine. I... ver más

Sharkwater

For filmmaker Rob Stewart, exploring sharks began as an underwater adventure. What it turned into was a beautiful and dangerous life journey into the balance of life on earth.

Driven by passion fed from a lifelong fascination with sharks, Stewart debunks historical stereotypes and media depictions of sharks as bloodthirsty, man-eating monsters and reveals the reality of sharks as pillars in the evolution of the seas.

Filmed in visually stunning, high definition video, Sharkwater takes you into the most shark rich waters of the world, exposing the exploitation and corruption surrounding the world’s shark populations in the marine reserves of Cocos Island, Costa Rica and the Galapagos Islands, Ecua... ver más

The Land Beneath Our Feet

When a 1920s silent film depicting a corporate land grab during the early days of globalisation arrives back in Liberia, it sparks an enquiry into how Liberians have lost sovereignty over the very land that sustains them.

The Land Beneath Our Feet follows a young Liberian man, uprooted by war, who returns from the USA with never-before-seen footage of Liberia’s past. The uncovered footage is embraced as a national treasure. Depicting a 1926 corporate land grab, it is also an explosive reminder of eroding land rights.

In post-conflict Liberia, individuals and communities are pitted against multinational corporations, the government, and each other in life-threatening dispu... ver más

I Am Not Your Negro

In 1979, James Baldwin wrote a letter to his literary agent describing his next project, Remember This House. The book was to be a revolutionary, personal account of the lives and successive assassinations of three of his close friends—Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr.

At the time of Baldwin’s death in 1987, he left behind only thirty completed pages of his manuscript.

Now, in his incendiary new documentary, master filmmaker Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished. The result is a radical, up-to-the-minute examination of race in America, using Baldwin’s original words and flood of rich archival material. I Am Not Your Negro is a journey into black history that c... ver más

Couple creates wildlife sanctuary in India by letting barren farmland return to nature

SAI Sanctuary is located in the Western Ghats of southern India—the heart of the watershed area for the entire south Indian peninsula, and one of the hottest ‘Hot Spots’ of biodiversity in the world, as designated by the United Nations. From the initial purchase of just 55 acres of private forested lands in 1991, the Sanctuary has grown to more than 300, with its positive influence being seen and felt in the National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries it borders—Brahmagiri, Nagarhole and Bandipur.

Island Earth

The biggest challenge facing our planet is how we will feed the world in the coming decades. Experts warn that we will have to grow as much food in the next 35 years as we've grown in the history of civilization.

But agriculture today has disastrous effects on the planet. For our survival a new system of growing food has to be established, one that doesn’t deplete the health of the land. Hawaiians have long known this, their society had to develop in harmony with their limited resources or face destruction. With this realization, the question now stands: what can we learn from Hawaii’s past to help save the Earth’s future?

Facing the destructive forces of modern agriculture, a handful of Hawaiians seek to use the wisdom of their ancestors to make Hawaii a beacon of... ver más

Ulin

Between the majestic Rungan and Kahayan rivers, just a few paces from the Sebangau national park, lays a jewel as yet relatively unknown to the world but increasingly in danger as the world fails to pay enough attention.

In the middle of the well-known and overexploited island of Borneo, benefitting from an unexpected level of protection from both a lazy river restricting its access and belief in a curse respected for centuries by local communities, a surprisingly rich forested ecosystem has survived. Until now.

As the scramble for lucrative natural resources and fertile soils continues to devastate the entire island, land that is both suitable and available becomes harder to find and heavy machinery moves ever-further into increasingly rem... ver más

Tilikum lived a horrible life. He lived an incredibly tragic life in captivity from the moment he was plucked from the ocean. He experienced horrific pain. He caused unspeakable pain. At least now there’s no more suffering from him.

When I started off the documentary, I was scared of him. I was initially terrified of him because I had come into this because of a death of a trainer. But then seeing him in person was just profoundly sad. You come to think of him as yet another victim.

His purpose in some way was hopefully to turn his tragic life into a lesson. He can truly be an ambassador for what’s wrong with having animals in captivity. If nothing happens, then Tilikum’s death and all these deaths will be in vain.
