Gentoo and libre software, what is your opinion?
I'm testing the few distros currently still shipping with do-what-you-want or at least offering working alternatives to systemd.
those include among others: * GUIX * gentoo * parabola * slackware / freeslack and some I can't access right now in the document I prepared for later, but this is what I remember.
I won't talk about the other distros now, just about gentoo.
Gentoo does not distance itself explicitly from non-free software(*). On the other hand it is a meta distro, where it only takes some lines in the BUILD section to filter out licenses and get the linux-libre equal kernel (deblob argument). Each system is unique. There's portage with additional software which is not controlled like in parabola and it's not an promoted distro by the fsf like parabola, but the individual system can be run as one.
what is your opinion on this?
(*) the core for a base system is GPL licensed software and there seems to be some discussion going on about other packages if I understand it right. #gentoo
