NASA observations reshape basic plasma wave physics

When NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale—or MMS—mission was launched, the scientists knew it would answer questions fundamental to the nature of our universe—and MMS hasn't disappointed. A new finding, presented in a paper in Nature Communications, provides observational proof of a 50-year-old theory and reshapes the basic understanding of a type of wave in space known as a kinetic Alfvén wave. The results, which reveal unexpected, small-scale complexities in the wave, are also applicable to nuclear fusion techniques, which rely on minimizing the existence of such waves inside the equipment to trap heat efficiently.

So I'm in need of a few stats in order to determine whether or not I have the right idea on one possible interpretation of Tesla's 3-6-9 fixation. Only problem is that I'm not really able to google the best (my google-fu sucks, I suppose), so I'm having trouble finding any credible sources for some of this information. If my hunch is anywhere near correct, though, this could be some pretty interesting stuff to the electric universe folks. Just need validation...

So anyway, here's what I'm looking for. If anybody can offer some help with locating good resources on any of these stats I'd be very much grateful.

* average measurements, and/or perigee & apogee measurements of the van allen belt
* measurements of the ionosphere (easy to find, I should have this myself in a little bit here)
* average dimensions of the rest of the Earth's magnetosphere
* the local solar measurements I should be able to find without any problems
* the average size of the heliotrope, or the best measurements that we have of it right now
* estimated si... ver más

The thermodynamics of learning

(Phys.org)—While investigating how efficiently the brain can learn new information, physicists have found that, at the neuronal level, learning efficiency is ultimately limited by the laws of thermodynamics—the same principles that limit the efficiency of many other familiar processes.

Scientists Have Confirmed a Brand New Form of Matter: Time Crystals

For months now, there's been speculation that researchers might have finally created time crystals - strange crystals that have an atomic structure that repeats not just in space, but in time, putting them in perpetual motion without energy.

Possible way to test black hole information paradox in the lab

(Phys.org)—A pair of researchers, one with National Taiwan University, the other with École Polytechnique in France has come up with a way to test the idea of Hawking radiation and the information paradox in a lab setting. In their paper published in the journal Physical Review Letters, Pisin Chen and Gerard Mourou describe their idea and the likely difficulties that researchers would face in trying to carry out actual experiments.

Studying the quantum vacuum: Traffic jam in empty space

An important step towards a completely new experimental access to quantum physics has been made at University of Konstanz. The team of scientists headed by Professor Alfred Leitenstorfer has now shown how to manipulate the electric vacuum field and thus generate deviations from the ground state of empty space which can only be understood in the context of the quantum theory of light.

QUANTUM PHYSICS: THE PHYSICS OF DREAMING

by Paul Levy

Quantum physics is the most subversive of all the sciences, having created a “reality crisis” in the field of physics such that the very idea of “reality” itself has been undermined, relegated to being a questionable, ambiguous and twilight concept. The very “reality” that pre-quantum physics had been studying has been demonstrated by quantum physics to not even exist! The greatest experts of quantum physics, if it’s even possible to speak of “experts” in a field that, according to Nobel prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman, “no one understands,” literally do not know “what” they are talking about. Physicists who study their own theory have, in their attempts at grasping its implications, lost their grip on reality, finding nothing, absolutely nothing to hold onto. Quantum physics has p

Vantablack®

is a super-black coating that holds the world record as the darkest man-made substance. It was originally developed for satellite-borne blackbody calibration systems, but its unique physical and optical properties have resulted in it finding widespread application. Vantablack is available in two versions, either directly applied to surfaces using vacuum-deposition technology or, in the case of Vantablack S-VIS, by spraying and then post-processing.

Vantablack absorbs virtually all incident light, making it ideally suited to addressing a host of light-suppression and light-management problems. It reflects so little light that it is often described as the closest thing to a black hole we'll ever see. With such exceptionally low levels of reflectance, Vantablack produces some startling optical effects; when it's applied to a three-dimensional object, Vantablack is... ver más

We just got the first real evidence of a strange quantum distortion in empty space

It's taken us 80 years to witness this.
BEC CREW 1 DEC 2016

For the first time, astronomers have observed a strange quantum phenomenon in action, where a neutron star is surrounded by a magnetic field so intense, it’s given rise to a region in empty space where matter spontaneously pops in and out of existence.

Called vacuum birefringence, this bizarre phenomenon was first predicted back in the 1930s, but had only ever been observed on the atomic scale. Now scientists have finally seen it occur in nature, and it goes against everything that Newton and Einstein had mapped out.

"This is a macroscopic manifestation of quantum field," Jeremy Heyl from the University of British Columbia in Canada, who was not involved in the research, told Science. "It’s manifest on the scale of a neutron star."

Shockwaves from an underwater explosion

Imagen/Foto

Water is highly incompressible, which means it does not readily change volume in response to a change in pressure. This means that a shockwave from an underwater explosion does not dissipate quickly like it does in air and actually travels much further.

In this demonstration, the three balloons are filled with air and highlight the shockwave passing through the water. Because air is a compressible fluid, the balloons are significantly deformed by the shockwave.

Unlike the demonstration of a person diving underwater to avoid gunfire, escaping an explosion this way would likely result in death. While the majority of the human body is water that the shockwave would leave unharmed, there are plenty of compressible parts (i.e. air filled lungs) that would be heavily damaged by the rapid change in pressure.

LOW-TECH MAGAZINE: Power Water Networks

During the second half of the nineteenth century, water motors were widely used in Europe and America. These small water turbines were connected to the tap and could power any machine that is now driven by electricity. As we have seen in a previous article, operating motors with tap water was not very sustainable. Because of the low and irregular water pressure of the town mains, these motors used unacceptably high amounts of drinking water. While the use of water motors in the US came to an end early...

Open access journals

There are now many academic journals that are free to read. Recently, a new open access mathematics journal launched:

A world-renowned Cambridge mathematician and a team of colleagues say they are taking on for-profit academic journal publishers with the launch of Discrete Analysis, an open access journal.

The peer-reviewed journal launched by Timothy Gowers is claimed to mark a 'new era' in academic journal publishing. Discrete Analysis will follow the 'diamond open access' model – free to read and free to publish in – and will be editor-owned.
